Plants the chooks will leave alone???
« on: October 06, 2011, 15:17 »
After the initial destruction of my garden by the newly arrived Ginger Crime Wave (5 ex-batts) I have fenced off the veg patch, but I was wondering what I could plant in the rest of the garden that they would leave alone???
Any ideas gratefully received!!!

Woody shrubs and trees survive. Roses, anything tall and prickly (Ive got raspberry canes and gooseberries but they will eat the fruit). Be prepared for lots of bare soil....no ground cover with chooks!!!
My garden is covered with chicken wire round pots, beds and raised beds.

Make sure the shrubs/trees are quite tall or the chooks won't give them a chance.I planted a young bay tree in with the hens thinking as it was 2 foot tall and quite bushy that it would grow beyond them quite quickly.Bad mistake. They had all the leaves off in no time.End of bay tree. With the benefit of that mistake i'd protect everything until it was established and growing out of chook hight or if youv'e got the funds plant standard shrubs/fruit trees.

One reason I did get hens inthe first place was to protect my plumb trees from that maggot thingy as I didn't like the idea of spraying. It worked.
