What size garlic cloves and shallot sets to plant?

What size garlic cloves and shallot sets to plant?

I'm planning to use some of last years crop of garlic and shallots to plant this Autumn (garlic) and next Spring (shallot).

What size of each is best? The largest cloves or sets I can find?

I always use my largest seed garlics for planting, and always get very large heads at harvest time. Same with shallots.

If I have a number of small cloves, I'll plant them off to one side as I find they rarely get as large as the others.

I use the largest garlic cloves but the smallest shallot ones.

The bigger ones seem to split into lots of small bulbs, bu the small ones come up with big ones at the end  :D
