Water question
« on: September 27, 2011, 21:51 »
Hi, when winter starts getting closer and my chickens start going to bed really early, what do I do about water for the chickens.  They drink loads at the moment, will they still drink enough during the shorter days or should I start putting a water holder inside their coop when I shut them in for the night.

This will be my first winter with chickens, so thanks in advance for your help.

I've only had chooks for over a year, so I'm no expert but I didn't put water in their coop last year.  They seem to get enough water during the day.  I know it seems a long time for them to go without but my lot survived a harsh Scottish winter  ;)

They will only eat and drink during the hours of daylight, so they won't need water in their coop at night.  During the long nights they will just snuggle down and sleep it off!

In fact having water in the coop could potentially cause problems with dampness and condensation, and especially if they knock it over and spill it, so you're certainly better without it in the coop.

Now just to check:
Will the hens have somewhere they can get to food and water during the day, whatever the weather?  So as soon as there is enough daylight they can head for their supplies - and not find the water frozen?!

Thanks, yes they will have access to their food and water as soon as they wake up. I put their water out fresh every morning, my next concern is how to stop it freezing during the day whilst I am at work...
