Eglu! - Set up advice please!
« on: September 27, 2011, 08:14 »
Hello,

I have recently acquired a shiny new (Well second hand but still!) Eglu classic.

Im just curious what bedding material people use with theirs?

Im guessing you put something under the roosting bars and something in the nest bowl?

Any advice would be appreciated - i have shavings in my current set up - will these be ok for now or will i need something new?

Cheers

Lew

Hi LJ - when we used the Eglu for the hens we always used shavings and the hens certainly seemed content. And yes we put the shavings in the nest bowl and under the roosting bars. If you put newspaper down first in the nesting bowl it makes it easier to clean out.

When we used Joyfull's eglu, I only put newspaper under the roost bars, as shavings weren't needed.  I put shavings and newspaper in the nest box, but the little dears took it all out and shredded the newspaper!

I always used Aubiose or Hemcore in the droppings tray and in the nestbox.  It illiminates ALL odour and a bale of it lasts at least 18 months.

Im used to poo picking due to the nature of my current coop.

I currently spend 5 mins each morning clearing out all of the mess.

With the roosting Bars/litter tray system with an Eglu - is this necerssery or would once a week clear out enough?

Once a week would probably not be enough.  Twice would be better.  I like to do it every day, takes 10 seconds.   :)

I just put shavings in the nest bowl.
All the poo is in the droppings tray, and the chooks havent complained about the smell.
Clean it twice a week.
Well, empty into the compost and hosepipe anyway.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

Same as Dominic. Newspaper spread under the bars and changed twice a week (ish) and roost bars scraped off. I use straw and shredded paper in the nest box and as it stays clean it doesn't need changing very often. I don't line the nest box because the design of the Cube has a ventilation slit in the middle of the base.
The Cube is wonderful! Simple clean out takes 5 minutes and the newspaper and poo go straight in the compost!!

Well, to update, the chooks are less then impressed with their new home to start with!!

They have generally avoided it and spend all the time they could as far away from it as possible!

I tired to put them in it in the day, and the normally very tame and placid hens fought like i was sending them to their deaths!!

I waited till dark and get them in without much fess, but they still bolted out of the coop first think in the morning heh.

Will hang a light tonight and hope they put them selves to bed!

I used Aubiose or Hemcore under the bars and in the nesting bowl. The hens did enjoy having straw in the nesting bowl though  :D

They seemed more keen to lay an egg on the straw than the Aubiose  :nowink:

I must be dead tight, as I only put dust extraced wood shavings in the nesting bit, tend to find they knock it into the spaces between the bars anyway. The droppings are so easy to clean out, and will do this a couple of times a week, and on the third, I'll take the whole lot out and wash it down with a strong jet from the hose pipe.

After a dry in the sun, back in the coop, fill up nesting bit with sawdust, sorted.

Once a month or six weeks, with wash out the inside of the eglu (not having a run attached makes this easier).

It is amazing how easy it is to clean, and the bale of shavings I got for £12 is going to last a year!
