What age do buff orpington pullets get combs?
« on: September 20, 2011, 18:40 »
Mine are now 23 weeks and not really much sign of a comb or wattle. I have looked at other pictures on here and younger girls have much more than mine. Is it just because they arent in a hurry to lay, this I dont mind as they are just my girls and will lay when they want to. My hybrids started to lay at approx 23 weeks and the week before their combs were dramatically showing signs of what was to come.

I would be interested to know this too. Mainly because I can't even be sure what sexes my Orps are!

I saw some pictures on a website of buff orpingtons with really mature combs etc and they were only 16 weeks old, so mine must be really late starters.

Hi I am no expert, but we have 14 Orps in all different colours (including a Buff) ages ranging from 20wks to about 2 years old. The youngest one that is laying is not quite a year old.

All of them have very different size wattles and combs even in the adult Hens.
Two of my 20wk chicks have very good size wattles and combs and I have been dreading the day they crow, (but there is no signs at all that they are Cockerels), yet I have 2, 25 wk chicks with absolutely no wattle or comb.  ???

So I can only advise that like most animals, they are all different, so don't make any assumptions until it lays or crow  ::)
