Rhubarb roots...
« on: September 16, 2011, 11:43 »
Has anyone any suggestions on how to buy some root sections, and do they work in the first year please? We were advised that our local GC would have some in soon, but I don't know when that will be, or what type they'll stock.

I personally don't mind waiting for seed to work over a couple of years, but it seems Mrs Growster is slightly more impatient...

Of course, I will ask around the patches, just in case someone is chucking some out, or dividing them, or want some veg from Plot G in exchange...

If you are on an allotment site, ask about.  Don't bother growing from seed.  If anyone's got any rhubarb, then ask if they can spare some.  It can be chopped out in November.  Don't plant it until January, just leave it for the frost to get at it.  Don't harvest in your first year, but after that, you're ok. :D

Hawkhurst sounds a bit 'New Forest'?  If I'm correct and you fancy a crown of Champaigne variety, I'll be digging one up in the next few weeks.    I live in Wiltshire.     Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Tony, that's very kind of you! Hawkhurst is in Kent actually, between Maidstone and Hastings. It used to take me two hours to drive to Swindon in the good old days, now it'll be nearer four I expect...

Sometimes I wish we did live near the New Forest too, (although we're looking at a job in Trowbridge even as we speak), but it'll be a long shot I'm afraid, to take you up on your kind offer! Thank you anyway!
