hens and garden birds

Oh dear!  When I was cleaning out the chicken house today I found a dead blue tit in the house.  It must have strayed in there by mistake and the girls decided to go for it  :(

Mine have managed to perfect the art of catching sparrows that come down for stray bits of corn. It's quite unsettling to watch them "stalk" it and even worse if they do catch one. Who said chickens were cute and harmless?

My 3 original bantams killed a wood pigeon that strayed into their run, it was almost as big as they were!

How can I train my hens to do that? I have been feeding the sparrows as well as the chickens. What's worse is,  they are pooing all over it. That must cause some health risks.

I've found two dead collared doves in the hen run this summer.  I am assuming they were this year's fledglings.  At first I thought it may have been the cats but reading the above posts I'm begining to wonder if it was the hens catching inexperienced birds as the cats dare not stray into chicken territory!

I am worming the hens this week, and about 2 dozen sparrows! :)

At least they will be less of a health risk . ;)

The starlings are going to have a shock this winter. The beggars used to terrorize our chickens but we have put a netting roof on the run which will hopefully keep them out.
