spring onions in autumn
« on: September 09, 2011, 17:51 »
OK I planted too many and have lots (I mean lots) still in containers ! What happens if I leave them in the ground, do they just become bigger? We will definitely use them if they are OK to just leave but I dont want them to go to waste.

Yes, I rather over sowed on spring onions and I've got heaps of them in the ground too. It wasn't helped by the fact that I dropped the packet and unintentionally sowed a clump of 100 seeds or so :)

Some of mine have been in quite a while now but they're absolutely fine so far. They're pretty overcrowded (particularly the unintentional clump) and some have got very big but it doesn't seem to be a problem. I just pull the biggest ones every time I make a salad or stir fry and the others spread out to fill the space. I haven't noticed any loss in quality so far, but I always strip off the outside layer of skin and that ought to get rid of any toughness.

They seem to be edible to matter how big they get, :D

and those too close together somehow seem to push themselves apart enough to grow  :nowink:

We had loads left last year and they just got bigger so we just used them for pickled onions.  It worked very well, well they didn't last long once opened!

I started off a trough of spring onion seeds in my unheated greenhouse yesterday.  Just because space was clearing and I had a few seeds left that I know won't keep that well for sowing next spring.

If you can offer a bit of weather protection you can have spring onions pretty much year round, just like salad leaves Grubbypaws, so pick the biggest ones as you need them and keep going with the containers  :)
