Can chickens eat maggots
« on: September 07, 2011, 22:58 »
Hi all, I'm very very new to all of this, my hens arrive 2 days and I can't wait ! I know that chickens eat insects but what I'm wondering is this, I'm an avid fisherman and sometimes I have maggots left after a fishing trip, if I was to put some in a kinder egg plastic egg with some small holes drilled in it for maggots to escape slowly would this be ok ?

Knowing hens, they will probably try to hatch the kinder egg and get a surprise when all the maggots hatch out!!        ;)

But seriously, the hens will eat the maggots, extra bit of protein!  The maggots are not those dyed ones are they?

Not sure that i`d want to risk it as the maggots could have been reared on poultry offal of dubious origins and quality.
If any of the eggs are to be eaten by sick or elderly people i would not.

Anglers will be immune and ok ! :D

I give mine any left over maggot from fishing, they eat the crystalis as well, and when I'm sorting out crickets for the lizard they are hanging around my feet waiting for any that jump out.

I also wondered about feeding maggots as mine all love the live mealworms and maggots can surely only be a bigger version. I think I will give them a go as they are sure to be a bit cheaper than the live mealworms from PAH. Mine aren't old enough to lay at the mo so not a problem re eggs.
