Chinese cabbage Yuki not growing like the pics
« on: September 07, 2011, 22:13 »
I sowed some chinese cabbage when I 1st got the plot and althouggh it's growing, the leaves are all open and not at all tight together like the pictures I've seen online.

The slugs have nibbled the outer leaves too but there is plenty of growth in the middles.

Am I being a bit impatient or have I done something wrong?

Cheers

Slugs --- slug bait required I'm afraid.

Chinese cabbage needs to be tied up with soft string if you want the shape you buy in the shop.

Gather the leaves together and loosely tie them. not to tight as the heart bit grows from the middle - obviously - and there has to be space for it to fill out. You might have to loosen the string if they get really big.

It is a fiddle, but if you leave them alone you still get an edible plant, they just are looser.

Ah thanks for this I'm not fussed about the actual shape I just thought that's how they're sposed to grow, lol

If the slugs have munched the outer leaves is it best to remove them after putting pellets down to get the growth going into the inner leaves?

I'd leave them on. They'll still provide some protection for the inner leaves, otherwise your inners will become outers!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
