Do Helleboras die back in summer?
« on: September 07, 2011, 20:04 »
Hi I've never grown them before....I had one planted in the garden and it seems to have disappeared completely?? not sure if it has died/been eaten  or is just resting! I am hoping it  will burst back to life next year!!
Chuck it in - it won't grow in the packet!

Hellebores are evergreen, so no, they don't die back usually.

Just in case, I wouldn't put anything else there until you know for sure that it hasn't come back up next spring.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Give it a go - if it was small when planted, it may still be there; mine self-seed all over the place and their old leaves need pruning off after flowering. They are pretty hardy so don't give up on them yet - what sort of site and soil was it planted in and did you water it in dry spells?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I agree .I thought i'd lost one a few years ago and sort of forgot about it until two years later I noticed a nice hellebore flower in february

Hellebores can be tricky. I planted 2 new specialty varieties and I thought they died through winter, but they came up in spring albeit a bit small, but there nonetheless. I'll likely move them to a better location as I think this one is too dry.

Even in my frigid Canadian winters, the other hellebore leaves are still there. A bit tatty but still there.

I love hellbores and have a few.  Sometimes when they are small and not very strong all their leaves seem to disappear but in the spring you'll see some new shoots coming through.  Dont give up on it yet.  Would it be a good idea to give it abit of a mulch?  I think they like damp, shady areas.
