Can you eat radish ”pods"
« on: September 06, 2011, 17:12 »
I let my radishes flower as the bees love them. Now there are pods on them. Can you eat them? Has anyone tried? I’ll have a go tomorrow when on the plot, but maybe everyone else knows that they are a culinary delight?

You can eat them but they are sometimes very hot.  There is a variety called Rats tail that you grow specifically for the pods  :)

I use radish to mark rows of seeds with slow germination and some of mine have got left also.  Never thought about eating the seed pods, i've got loads.

What do you do with them, eat them just as they are raw or cook with them.

I'm hoping some will ripen so i can save my own radish seed for next year. :)

Depends if they are hot or HOT  ;)

If they are peppery but still nice raw, eat them that way.  Otherwise a quick stir fry calms them down a bit  :)  Rats tail radish is fairly mild but other types left to go to seed can blow you head off - here speaks the voice of rash experience  ;)

Yeeeeessss It was about that point I discovered I'd drunk all my water as well   Ended up eating a ridge cuke to try and calm my mouth down

If they are hot, you could make some fearsome pickles out of them.  Never thought of that with mine but worth an experiment I feel.  Might try it next year  :D

Thanks for all the information. I think I’ll try nibbling one, and then see if I can get seed from them.(But I think I still have radish seed from all the freebies that come with gardening magazines).

I had no idea! Was intrigued, so I did a spot of Googling and found some interesting info and recipe ideas. Seems like the whole world already knew about radish pods except me. Mrs Beeton even had a recipe for pickled radish pods! Looks like there is a break in the rain so I'm off to the plot now, but if I remember later I will start a new thread in the recipes section so we can all make use of the radishes we would otherwise pull up when they run to seed  :)
