Raspberry question
« on: September 05, 2011, 20:22 »
Hi

I put in 6 canes of polka in march from wilko 4 died, 1 is a summer rasp, but the one that is fruiting  has had quite a few rasps and there must be at least 30 -40 on it ready to fruit.
I replaced the dead ones and there are some coming thru on them but i dont know if its to late for them.

Think its definitely too late for fruit this year. The fruit grows on this years stems. But no reason that you wont have fruit next year :) Remember to cut the stems back before spring to encourage new growth.

I bought some bulbs from wilko (flowers) for my windowbox and they did nothing.  I have a friend who bought seed potates from them too and they were terrible.  I won't buy anything from there again.

 :(
If you read the Forum, a lot of people are happy with the products that they buy from Wilko.
I had great results from Wilko spuds last year.
The weather this year has been very unpredictable/unseasonable and may explain the bad results.

I've had fab results from Wilko's spring bulbs, will go back this autumn for more :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I should have rephrased my post, I buy lots of things from Wilko just not bulbs after the last time, they did grow but no flowers came up!  Its nice to hear lots of other people have had success  :)

Polka is an autumn raspberry.

Mine were from Marshalls planted in March. They were a primocane so fruited this year.

They've gone nuts with the fruiting.
Top tip for camping....don't go.

As said before it is too late for fruit this year from the ones you replaced. Cut them right back around mid feb (thats what my book tells me anyway) and then mulch with plently of well rotted horse manure. Ensure they are kept damp throughout the growing season and if they go really bonkers make sure you tie them in to support. If you are very lucky with them you may need to think them out too. Just cut out the weaker/thinner canes just below the surface.

This is my second year with raspberries - like you i didn't get off to a great start last year but this year I have been picking about a kilo of raspberries a week for the last three weeks from 6 canes (not taking into account the berries my 4yr old snaffels down when we are there), although they are a diferrent variety.

Good Luck! :D
Kate
Always thankful for advice!
