« on: September 04, 2011, 19:27 »
i just wanted to post on here how fantastic autumn raspberries are,i planted some previously planted roots this march and they have gone bananas(not litterally)i have 4 plants and i have taken a least a punnet every day since about mid july and still they come, with rapberries being so expensive to buy and you can freeze them i think they must be one of the best crops to grow(if you like them that is )i just slung some growmore round every 6 weeks and watered, and the taste is sweeter than supermarket.i am getting more next year :D

You just can't beat fresh raaas Toomany!

We're sorting out earlies and autumn ones as we speak, and it is an absolute delight to have all thes fantastic fruits just jumping off the stems each day!

Go for it - grow as many as you can and splunge your fantasies...

Then grow some earlies as well, you'll be a complete raaa person then!

Do the late season ones get more attacked by birds, less, or about the same? Because I'm lucky if I get a handful from my summer raspberries, the birds get the rest. It's kind of a difficult place to net them because they're leaning up against a wall.

 :) :) :)
I bought 12 canes of Joan J and planted them almost 18 months ago.  This is there second season and i am picking between 3 and 4 pounds of rasps a day!!!!

They are my most favourite fruit eva, I have also planted yellow rasps autumn variety too, Sungold i think, i hope they are as prolific as the others.  They also send of loads of canes which make a great battering tool!  :tongue2:

I am looking forward to having home grown raspberries next year, and strawberries too. Gutted I got the allotment too late this year to get any going, but at least it give me time to plan things out properly.

BTW, nice thread...there are (naturally) so many threads about various problems people encounter it's good to have a positive one like this now and again!

Don't think so Shokkers. Ours are near a path and get a few passers-by clicking a few off, but they are so prolific, that even if birds get their 10%, well, so what!

I don't net them, because the shoots get so tangled, my language deteriorates with every little bough of fruity raaas.

So they're on there own all the time!

As it should be - you can  grow another stem for the birds.

I inherited one Raspberry bush with my plot 3 years ago and I have been picking constantly from June onwards, berries very large this month as well and very tasty, in the winter I need to propogate some as it's rather bushy.

Planted 9 canes of Polka last year and now they are in full production (grown lots more canes now of course  ;) )

Birds leave them alone, and each berry is at least an inch long.

We pick about a pound and a half daily

Fabulous taste too  :D

I don't grow summer raspberries but I have had old canes of autumn varieties flowering in June/July and the birds usually beat me to the berries!

The autumn crop itself (early this year ) seems to be left alone, which is really the opposite of what I would have expected given the reducing supply of other bird foods (but then again I'm an orangutan and not a bird so what do I know?!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I didn't know orangutans had a penchant for raspberries

I think I need to have a serious chat with my mum (I'm suspecting a bit of cross-pollination!)
