Can I compost it?

My container grown courgettes have succumbed to mildew and are in a sorry state. I presume that it would be unwise to put the plants into my compost bin but what about the soil they have been growing in?

Wont I just spread the spores around? I didnt think that composting destroyed them.

Interestingly the plants that have been worst affected are the ones I started very early. I dont know whether that has affected them or whether it is the variety; they are Venus. I meant to get Defender but was sent the wrong variety. I didn't think that it mattered too much but maybe this variety dont do so well in containers. I cant complain though we have had as many courgettes as we could have wanted.
