Runner Beans
« on: September 02, 2011, 18:35 »
We have grown runner beans for many years and for the first time, today we have found our complete crop covered in 'black soot'.  This has appeared in the last two days.  Any help and suggestions to a cure and what it might be would be greatly appreciated.  There is still plenty of bloom setting.  We have had an amazing crop this year.  HELP.

Welcome to the site  :D

I am not sure but two things spring to mind.  Firstly, have you had a lot of aphids (greenfly etc) on the beans?  A side-product of their existence can be black sooty mould.  The other suggestion is a type of fungal infection.  Have you got a piccie?

If you could edit your forum profile(click your username) to show your location it would help as climate and locality are often really important in answering growing questions.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Not seen that before; do you think it might just be "old age" and the beans are getting ready to pack it up? Have they been out all summer?

Beans get rusty eh! Looks like a burnings required as the black pustules will overwinter. No seed must be saved either according to the RHS.
