overwintering begonia's and dahlias
« on: September 01, 2011, 00:16 »
Hi, i'm new to the forum. i've been gardening for about 10 years having picked up the hobby from my grandad :) but something i have never learnt is how to overwinter begonias and dahlias. i've read lots of different things. last year i put them in a box uncovered, after drying them and left them in the loft until spring. when i took them out they had shrivelled up to the point that some were squidgy when squeezed :(. i planted the firm tubers and they were fine, producing lovely this year.
so.. what is the best way to store them??

I dig mine up when the leaves have been cut back by the first frost, cut off most of th leaves and then leave them upside down under the greenhouse staging unitl the stalk is dry (or dropped off from begonias)

Then I dust them with sulphur to stop any rot, put them in some old dryish growbag compost in a bucket and leave them under the staging all winter (frost free green house)

I start them back into growth mid spring  :D

See this post, one of many from Yabba - an acknowledged expert on this forum who is sadly missed  :(

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
