Operation 'Chicken run construction'
« on: August 31, 2011, 20:15 »
What a better way to spend a week off work...........build a chicken run! Weather fairly good, so I decided to make good use of the time.  :D

More digging tomorrow to bury some weled mesh in the ground. I have searched high and low but cant find the adequate depth it should be buried to. Is 30cm adequate or do I need to dig deeper (preferably stopping before I get to Australia)

Hello Red

30cm down and 30cm outwards would be ideal.

Nice run - though I have used the clear plastic wriggly panels on my roof.

Another tip is guttering going to a rain water barrel and a feed off it into the chicks water container - a piece of hose with a dripper/piece of soak hose on the end will be fine. Solves the water problem permanently.

Many thanks for the info and helpful suggestions, very refreshing to have other peeps look and give me advice  :D

Thought I would try a panoramic view for a change

For my sins eco I was a builder, now settled into a nice surveying job  ;)

Unfortunately bad weather has hindered progress and I had to return to work, but this is were I am upto. Mesh is on all bar the top bit, coop is finished and fixed into place. One of my contacts has just taken up a crazy paving driveway and is going drop them off, so as well as mesh in the ground around the run, I am going to put a path round the sides. I am just waiting for the tree surgeon to ring me back for some wood chippings for the run.

Did a bit of accessory/supply shopping on the internet, so those should be arriving later this week, hopefully.

So all in all, think I am about finished............sure I had to get something else but for the life of me I cant think what!!!!!  :)

Sorry to butt in (excuse the pun) but can you expand on the water idea Abacus.  I have the guttering and a butt but manually fill up their water containers and an automated system would be fab but I don't have a clue   Have you got a pic of yours?

Oooh here's an idea!  You should get yourself some of those little animals covered in feathers!  Can't think what they're called...

You're right Geo, those little feathered things would spoil it.  I hear they poo rather a lot and like to dig holes.  I think the house and run looks much better without them!
