composting weeds
« on: August 30, 2011, 18:58 »
Ive got 5 bins made from old wooden pallets lined with polythene to keep it
warmer. In these i put all my waste from home and veg plot.
Also have a big heap about 6ft x 6ft between brick walls, in this i throw all weeds,
this includes couch, bindweed, dock, thistle, nettles and grass, will i ever be able to use this as compost for the veg plot or will the weed seeds survive.
 Thanks carlrmj.

Bad news I'm afraid  :(

These weeds are pernicious survivers and will just wait until they are released to start growing again.

You could dorwn them though and then put the sludge in with your other compost --- or burn them and use the ash likewise  :D

Like SSB says - I've got an old water tank with about 6" of water where I try to chuck the weeds. After a while you can put the foul-smelling gunge on the compost heap.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
