Is this an edible/flower/weed?
« on: August 30, 2011, 15:37 »
I have just taken over a rather abandoned plot and am trying to rescue from the weeds anything useful and worth keeping.
Whilst clearing out the greenhouse I've come accross a few of these plants and I have no idea what they are.
I've pulled one up and the roots are white and quite fleshy (thick pencil diameter and forked?) and smell quite 'turnipy', but from research the leaves don't look right... does anyone have any ideas?

It looks a lot like garlic mustard (aka as Hedge Garlic or Jack in the Hedge) - it's a fairly common weed round here.  The leaves are supposed to be edible and can be added to salads

I like the sound of garlic mustard = edible.  Anything I can eat can have a small space on the plot  :)  may have to move it out of the grenhouse though.
Didn't think to crush the leaves and smell/taste those but will do tomorrow when I go back over to the lotty... will reply when I've has a sniff

Yup, it's garlic mustard!  thanks for the help

now I've done a bit of researching i've realised i have more outside - looks quite a different plant in 2nd year
it's rather bitter though but apparently cooking will help, I may have to try a garlic mustard omelette  :)
