hi, i am going to split my plants , will i be  able to pick and eat sticks next year.

I've split mine a few times and got a crop the following spring and as you'd expect even better in subsequent years.

If the root is large and healthy then you can get away with picking a few sticks. Leaving it alone for a year to 'recharge' will deliver serious rewards in all future years though.

If it were me, I'd split it and then see how strong the regrowth is.

as an addendum you can tell when rhubarb needs lifting and dividing when instead of nice thick stalks all you get is a load of thin stalks, lift & divide in the autumn about every 4 or 5 years....

I just divide a couple of plants each year, the others continue to give me a full crop next year.

Make sure you give it a good bed of compost/rotted manure when you plant the pieces out. They like a good feed
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
