Vinegar for weedkiller???
« on: August 30, 2011, 11:51 »
Just been looking around for some glyphosate to clear a new plot that ive just took over and came acoss a video and a few other links that claim mixing Vinegar water and liquid soap will kill weeds and anything else in its path...has anyone used this method to clear a plot....I reckon vinegars pretty cheep to buy so if it does work is it worth it?

this lists many reasons why it's not worth trying
http://www.garden-counselor-lawn-care.com/vinegar-weed-killer.html

another thing to be pointed out is that it's not licensed for use, so under the present rules is illegal for use. of course it's up to you whether you try it or not

Chances are that you'd kill off lots of lovely insects and possibly worms in the soil by adding such strong acid.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

no it doesn't, Roundup only kills the plants and roots in my experience.

Ok thanks guys for the info its very helpful. Obviously my motive behind using the vinegar mix was to reduce cost, we all know round up costs a fortune and to clear a full plot can get quite expensive but I think its what I will go with in the end. I'll just have to do it bit by bit as and when I can afford to....out comes the cardboard for now and cover all the raised beds up after ive strimmed them all down, at least that will keep it in check.

thanks.

I note that the video on vinegar weed killer is followed by how to make smoke bombs by mixing sodiun chlorate and sugar - seems like a good site to trust?

i think that 10 rod is about 300 sq yards my teancy says i have a 18th acre plot but also refers to it as rod
if im right with my maths wich is unlikley lol then yours is about 184m2 and this would just about do it
it says that it does 150m2 so you may need 2 packs and that would leave you enough to hit any tough regroth a 2nd time

hey thanks for the info mike1987...I dont feel to bad about buying it now at that price. Our local builders merchant has that one in as well I think and he's always a bit cheaper than the big fellas. cheers

Does that mean you're no longer on the list, Plottered, as per your signature.

Or are you on someone else's list?

...your correct im on someone else's list lol

explanation......I am on my local councils list but in the meantime i got a small plot on a community garden site. Through this project I met up with people from Edge lane allotments in Manchester (home of our very own Scabs and a nice fella he is to)  ;) Anyway I put my name on there list and lo and behold within a few weeks i was offered a plot. Edge lane is an excellent site and i intend keeping to that plot but, I am involved with some projects on the community garden which I want to see through before I pull off there. I also intend staying on my local councils list (Tameside MBC) as there's a battle going on for allotment land which ive posted about before. Searching Ashton allotment action should get you to a post about it. Phew time for a coffee after all that  :D
