Weeds - what goes around...
« on: August 28, 2011, 19:24 »
We had a dry spring down my way so I had very few weeds.  I was smugly accepting compliments from other plot holders on how neat and tidy my plot was  :D

A few wet weeks and boy oh boy    Spent 3 hours down there today and have still got about half the plot to do.  It hasn't helped that over the last couple of weeks every day off I have had has been pouring down so I haven't been able to get out there but they's rampant, rampant I tells ya!

Those weeds are getting thei own back

I know what you mean New shoot. A week away and the nice brown earth between my asparagus has sprung a  green covering and there is a rather nice crop of thistles in the bark paths just for good measure

may I  join this Berkshire Triumvirate, by adding that the weeds at this end of the M4 are marching on at a brisk pace!!
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

Our swede, salsify and parsnips etc have all covered the gaps between the rows, and the annual weeds are getting smothered more than somewhat.

Of course they're growing there, but unable to make any headway, and are weak and spindly and satifyingly easy to hoik out... Even the stray bits of couch are easy to pull!

Wish I could say the same about the brambles, which are shooting up everywhere...

And the bindweed.

just don't talk to me about bindweed  :nowink:

But worse, by far, I have loads of that little leaved plant, bittercress is it? that makes zillions of seeds
You only have to blink to find some more  and of course the untended plot next door is full of the stuff  >:(

If you have ever happened to catch a bittercress seed head "exploding" its seeds all over the place (up to a metre, apparently) you will appreciate why they are so good at spreading themselves all over the place!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

If you came round mine for dinner, you'd have a lovely plate of steamed weeds, roast slugs and a side portion of stones  :(

And despite huge mounds of brambles, that I have left so I can enjoy the blackberries (I've aquired a lagre v. overgrown field a few months back that I'm v. slowly trying to sort out) they are completely barren - so they will ALL be cut back (too many to face digging out just yet!

my hubbies fed up with next doors plot as all along the edge at least 5 foot in are weeds that are now in flower and spreading their seeds

he took the plot on and admitted that he would not be able to manage it but he uses about 12ft by 10ft spot in the middle and the rest left to weed and spread

but he's a nice bloke and has had a few troubles so i think let him have his space as it is really a beautiful place to be when you need some time out, i just wish we didn't have to suffer the seeds  but hoe we will!! :D
dig dig dig dig digging, rid me of those little weeds....

We ended up erecting  adebris netting cover to our boundary fence last year, Teasmade, to kep out as many of the weed seeds from next door as possible. (only 1m tall)

It has made a big difference, and gave a useful windbreak as well  :D :D
