How much to cut back loganberries
« on: August 27, 2011, 14:06 »
I planted a loganberry last year and this year it's grown on very well. I've got it in a bed alongside a wall, with horizontal wires on the wall to tie it in. Looking at it now, I want to tidy it up a bit for autumn and tie it into the wires, but I'm not quite sure what to do with it. It seems to have just put off two extremely vigorous shoots, both of which are way higher than the top of the wall, and left to themselves they've just shot up, doubled back and gone back down to the ground again. Should I cut these back to the top of the wall or should I just let them do their own thing?

They will fruit from all along the leaf nodes of the  new growth next year, so I would leave all the new growth to maximize fruit next year. Just tie them in to stop them being damaged by winter gales.
I have just tied in my Tayberry against a wall and loop the new growth in circles to control the amount of space it takes up.

Thanks. The shoots have to be 15 to 20 feet long so I had no idea what to do with them. Even wild brambles don't put off shoots as long as that :)

I cut back the old wood and tie the new wood (yes! mine are about 15' too) in a wave pattern on either side. I've got 4 horizontal wires so you can squash them up a bit and they take up less space.
I usually manage to bend the branch but it doesn't break. New shoots will form at the bend if it does die off.
Hope I get as good a crop next year as this!!
