vanishing cauliflower curds
« on: August 26, 2011, 20:30 »
After a little success growing cauliflower last year, we corrected our identified mistakes for this years crop. Put in the strongest 12 plants, into well compacted ground (last years mistake), covered with a net on poles and wire like a tent, everything going well mostly, a couple of lacklustre plants, one keeled over. But last week there were 5 plants I could see a little bit of curd forming, now the covering leaves have been eaten from tips down exposing curds which are in various stages of destruction, some florets gone,  one has gone completely right down to the curds base, not a scrap of curd left. No slug trails (although we have them around) a hole has been in the netting for while,(must be how the caterpillars got in), no signs of rabbit droppings although I have never seen one in our garden. I'm not sure what can be causing this. Any ideas anyone.

Chris

Hi and welcome  :)

If your net is only just covering the plants, it might be pigeons.  They learn to sit on nets and their weight pushes it down so they can peck through and eat the crop beneath.
