When to harvest pears
« on: August 26, 2011, 17:12 »
Hi I'm new to the site and this has probably been asked before.  I have two pear trees (comise and conference) on smallroot stock. Last year I had small pears which I didn't bother picking. This year they have very large fruit on them and are weighing down the branches.  I read somewhere that pears should be harvested before they are ripe. Is this correct or do I leave them on the trees until they ripen. All advice welcome.

We've got a small pear tree (about 7 years old) which produces a dozen or so pears per year (be gentle, it's very small) and they tend to pick themselves. When they drop they are usually very, very ripe. If I wanted to keep them for any length of time (a week or so) I'd certainly pick them a bit early.

You could always make perry.  :D
