Anybody had luck growing mushrooms?
« on: August 20, 2011, 17:08 »
I'd love to be able to grow them successfully, because we do tend to get through rather a lot of them. I've tried the kits you can buy but never had any success with them. I know you can buy spawn or dowels to grow them, but I've never tried those.

Anybody ever had much success with mushrooms? And if so, which method did you use?

If you put 'grow mushrooms' into the site search and read the threads, you'll not find much success, I'm afraid :(

I had a kit about 30 years ago and grew some good mushrooms, but it was expensive and I have not bothered since. I kept the kit in the cupboard under the sink! You have to keep them damp, but not too wet or you do get flies.
A friend had a load of spent mushroom compost delivered and got a good lot of mushrooms from that.

Pretty much the same as Azubah; long time ago, got some mushrooms, but not cost-effective, and no better than the same button mushrooms in the supermarket.

Shame really, it would be good to grow some really exotic mushroom really cheaply, but I've got a funny feeling we would already know about it if it was that easy.  :(

I think Orchard Lady mentioned planting spawn out in a paddock....  Perhaps you could find that in a search...

I've never tried - but T&M, I think, have small kits of oyster mushrooms, lion's mane and another type.  Also garden centres or B&Q sometimes have small kits as well. ;)

I did try spores once. They came as a coating on some sort of grain. They did not take.
If you place a mushroom on paper it drops spores onto the paper. I have never tried growing them this way, but it might work if you got the right medium to grow them in.

In spring I bought a packet of what I assume are spores from wilco's but I haven't done anything with them yet,not sure why.

I was given a mushroom log as a pressie which was drilled and had dowels knocked into it, plus it came with a bag of little dowels.  It is a bit of a pain as you need a fresh cut log to put them in.  OH does tree work so we sorted that and followed the instructions to the letter, but never managed to grow anything except some dodgy looking toadstools  :(

I've also had a festive gift of a kit which comes in a polystyrene box and got a few mushrooms off that but not enough to be worthwhile.  Wouldn't bother buying one for myself  ;)

I bought a blue oyster mushroom kit on Ebay and had enough mushies for three (fried them in butter  :tongue2:). Have just bought some mushie spore from the same place (99p +postage) and am going to have a go using the same method so will let u know how it turns out... :D
