Nipped buds on Tomatoes!
« on: August 19, 2011, 20:48 »
Can anyone give me an idea of what nipped off all my tomato blooms this year?  I still have a few left but no fruits yet on one plants and only one solitary tomato on the other.
They have been outside since they've been able to stand it as I have no real greenhouse space.

Sorry don't know, but it's happened to me too
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I have to say, I've tried 100s and 1000s toms two years running now and they have been a dismal failure both times.  They look half dead before the blooms even set in!

It's just the weather, nights have been too cool this year for them  ::)

We've continued to have some nights down to 9C, so I'm sure you must have done :(

I agree with the last post. The weather hasn't been right for tomatoes this year, too cool and dry. The other thing I have found is that you have to help the tomatoes fertilise. Tap the plants occasionally so that the flowers get properly fertilised.

Cool nights has been a problem in many areas.
Here in north Wales it is no different.
Plenty of flowers but slow forming fruit.
I have just taken out all the flowers to let the fruit develop.
Mainly because they are never going to set now.
Besides tapping the plant spraying the flowers with water can help.

My main problem this year is that my flowers seem to be being nipped off by something - would it be birds??  I can't find any creepy crawly pests.

If they really are being nipped off rather than failing to set it could well be birds, and top of my list of suspects would be sparrows (not necessarily all of them but it only takes one or two to develop the bad habit.)

I've actually seen them pecking runner bean flowers off, apparently just for "fun", so this year I've suspended netting above my Munty frame to try and put them off (they're not completely enclosed and there is little danger of anything getting trapped in it and so far it seems to be working.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I think a decent greehouse might be the answer next year.  I only have a couple of plastic jobbies but I think I may have the space for a decent glass one.

My outdoor toms are much better than the indoor ones this year.

Well, at least they were 5 days ago.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
