Pesky Peacock
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:51 »
Hi there,

I have recently acquired a regular visiting peahen that the owners don't want to come and collect.  It keeps flying into my chicken run and scaring the girls half to death and eating all their food.  I think I know where it has come from and my plan was to catch it and take it back there but there in lies the problem.  As soon as I get anywhere near it flies off!!  Has anyone got any advice on how I might be able to catch it or what i can do to get rid of it.  I feel a bit sorry for it really but i can't have it scaring my girls.  thanks.
I dog, 1 cat, 1 horse, 1 Light Sussex, 2 Speckledys, 2 Cuckoo Maran:)

just a suggestion and might be totally wrong but could you try using a live fox trap...? put food in and try to entice it in by scattering food around it?

only reason i thought of that was that i think the size of the fox and peahen might be similar??

best of luck :)

Thanks for the reply but unfortunately I don't have a fox trap  :)  Also, I would probably end up catching my hens instead  :D

A sliding  noose of strong string with the far end tied  to a 6ft garden cane for a speedy tighten. Bait inside the noose  and when the peahen steps inside lift the cane to tighten the noose around its legs.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that the line near the noose is securely pegged or weighted down with the line still free to tighten .

If  you do not do this the peahen will get airborne and that is not good. ::)

You can leave the noose out and let the peahen get used to it if it is wary.
Best done with 2 people, a string puller and a sprint and grabber!

There will be much squawking and flapping. ;)

Could you try the RSPCA? If it's owners don't want it back maybe the RSPCA will rehome it or advise you on what to do.

Thanks everyone, some excellent suggestions, it hasn't appeared today but I will arm myself with a noose for the first attempt I think.  Watch this space  :)
