Ill Peking Chick
« on: August 18, 2011, 21:00 »
I recently had an ill peking hen which was treated for red mite & cocci, she unfortunatly had to be put to sleep. I now have a peking chick showing the same signs as the hen did in the early stages, unsteady on feet and her claws are turned inwards? I have seperated her from the other chicks which are silkies and they seem fine. I do not understand why they are becoming sick yet I have other chickens at home which seem fine?

Well, bent toes can be what is causing the unsteadiness on the feet, and there can be all kinds of reasons for curles toes.

Most of them, if exhibiting as chicks, are due to incorrect incubation humidity.

Are you feeding the chicks a medicated feed?

If not, I would probably treat everyone (including all of the adults) with coxoid as a prophylactic measure.  It is rare that adults get coccidiosis, but it can be spread very, very easily to chicks, if your hygeine isn't absolutely perfect (not only hand washing, but full change of clothes too).

I have treated all my chickens with baycox for Cocci and have disinfected with virkon and jeyes fluid all houses and poultry equipment. My pekin chick is still seperated from the others and is very chirpy but is still finding it hard to balance? Other than that she seems fine so not sure where to go from there.......

Farm Gate chick crumb with ACS is the medicated one, I've used this and their medicated rearers now my chicks are older. They have a good website that will tell you where you can buy it near you.
