Are my tomatoes ever going to ripen?
« on: August 18, 2011, 20:04 »
I have 6 Rosada tomatoes plants in my greenhouse and whilst they are abundant with fruit so far only one has started ripening. What are the chances of me getting a decent crop or due to the lack of sun Am i going to be making lots if green chutney! :(

Fear not, warmer weather is (allegedly) on its way this weekend.

Don't give up on them yet  :D

I'm in the same boat, you're not alone. I've had a Tigerella, a couple of GD's and that's it.  Waiting patiently though  :)

That's mostly the case here, I'm surprised you are not further advanced than that in Essex.

If they're in the greenhouse, throw in a banana skin, this technique ripens them - obviously the banana skin will turn black.  But it does work :D

No, not sad at all - I very nearly took a picture of the few nearly ripe tomatoes that have appeared this week I was so chuffed!  It's not been such a good year for toms this time for me but I blame the hit and miss weather  ::)

My toms are outside next to a south facing brick wall for heat.  I've harvested 1 lonely mini tomato.  Everything else is pea green.  When I lived in hotter climes I never harvested tomatoes before the first week of September - so yours have some time yet!
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

The advice to put a banana in to help them ripen works BUT it also stops any new tomatoes setting.

I've been growing a number of different varieties (about 15 different sorts) over the last few years and, in general, the cherry tomatoes ripen first, then the beefsteak and then finally the "normal sized" ones.

This year the tomatoes are behaving strangely, poor setting rates on many varieties (I've got 3 or four plants with only one tomato on them) but those that have set seem to be growing very large. Sub-Artic Plenty - a variety I've grown for about 10 years - seems to have much larger fruits this year than I've had before. Red Cherry are usually the first to ripen but this year they're still green.

Weird

If they're of a decent size, I put my green tomatoes in a brown paper bag together with either a ripe tomato or a ripe apple, then close the bag up.  They soon ripen that way and any that don't, or if I have too many, they are for chutney or relish.
