Jasminum Officinale
« on: August 18, 2011, 14:14 »
I have 3 Jasminum Officinale, (Clotted Cream, whatever that is)

I think they are white flowering, (no flowers yet) they have been in the conservatory most of the time,

I have put them alongside the fence now, plenty of compost and I think, well drained soil

I have planted them outside now, they were getting a bit unruly, but dont need cutting back, arent that big, yet

When are they supposed to flower ?

I havent seen any flower buds on them, they were bought lasy year (3 of them)

I would like to have a house plant of Jasmine in the conservatory, any suggestions on what species ?

I have also got a Aztec Nicotiana (Jasmine Scented) which I started from seed, that is flowering, the flowers are at the end of a really long stem though, just wondered if this is normal

Next year I want a house plant that is going to be highly scented and not going to end up like a triffed and take over the conservatory, any suggestions ?

(it can get very hot in there, but there is windows that help control the temperature)

Thanks for any suggestions you can offer  :)

Clotted cream has cream flowers rather than the standard white.
I've had mine in for 4 years now, and in June or July I had only a handful of flowers :(

I've had a word with it and if it doesn't flower next year............it's headed for the bin  >:(

So if any kind soul knows how to get them to flower...they could save a plant ::)

mmmm, if that is the case, I think I am going back to the garden center about these plants, only reason I bought them was for the flowers and scent

The compost heap may get another 'guest'  >:(

The normal white flowerd version takes some years to really flower profusely, so I am guessing clotted cream will be the same.

Shame really that they never tell us this sort of information when we buy plants and we end up finding out the hard way.

I thought these flowered every year  :(

I have seen some huge ones, masses of flowers, never thought of how old they were

I guess I will just have to let the * take over the garden before I see any flowers then  :(

It can take its chances then with the weather, I dont mind putting myself out if its going to flower(at least I get some reward for any work I have done on it)

If you ever consider pruning it, make sure you don't cut off the flowering wood ...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

i've got one thats been in the ground for about 7 years and though it's put on a lot of growth the last two years the flowers have been really pathetic. It's in an out of the way corner so if left it alone. If it was in a more promenant position it would have met the chipper years ago.
But I've also got a Italian or Yellow Jasmine(jasminium Humile) and that's really good value for money. It's an upright shrub about 6 ft all round and it flowers it's heart out.I can't detect a lot of scent but i'm always missing scent's when others detect them.(But I can always smell fox when most people can't)Strange.

only reaon I got mine was I saw thenm in the wild in Thailand and Sri Lanka, I liked the smell in the evening, so I thought I'd have em in my garden

Now I have put em out they are doing well (I think) they are along side a fence, it gets the sun most of the day

I dug a hole, put in some john Innes compast, then took em out of the pot and that was it, cover the top with soil, then just watered em, I maybe lucky and get some flowers some time  :)

I might be totally wrong but maybe somebody else will tell us.

Would a few feeds a year with tomato feed/fertilizer encourage some more flowers?

I've been using Miracle Gro, it worked on my other plants (indoors and out)

I used that on my veg, ended up with decent carrots and beetroots

Used it earlier in the year on the flowers in the front garden, even the weeds got bigger  >:( but that made em easier to get out  :)

I mentioned tomato feed because I think it was ment to encourage more flowers and hence fruit.Although miraclegro would help maybe I was just thinking tom feed would be better.Where is Mum when you need her?

Cant see that hurting, worth a try, (I'll give anything a try)

I dont know if its too late in the season for them to flower now though, but they seem to be spreading a bit now though

Is it worth putting a fleece over them during the winter ?
I know I didnt get much in the way of strawberries this year

But the hens been laying like there is no tomorrow  :)
