Surplus Fruit/Veg, Chutney's & Slow Cookers
« on: August 18, 2011, 09:08 »
I seem to have an abundance of Apples, Plums, Green Tomatoes and Corgettes.
I hate waste and would love to use them up but we don't eat Jam or Puddings.
I've already made about 10 jars of Green Tomato/Apple chutney (on the hob) but it actally hasn't used up much of the stock, I used Vals book and adjusted to recipes to suit us.

I bought a book yesterday on slow cookers because I'm determined to use mine more this year and I've been trawling the net looking for chutney recipes for slow cookers.
I'd like to use up the stock and use the slow cooker.

Has anyone got any tried/tested recipes that would use up some of the ingrediants mentioned? There seem to be plenty of apple/tomato recipes but I'd like to use up the plums and corgettes as well (not necessarially together) :D

I've never made chutney in the slow cooker ...  does it thicken properly?  Just wondering if it can boil down and lose the excess water  ???  Seems like a great idea if it would - I could chuck it in first thing and head off to work, potting up in the evening.  Please keep us posted on the experiment ...    ;)

I've bought a book with several slow cooker recipes including some Chutney ones. I'm going to adjust them to taste and have a go at the weekend, I'll let you know what happens.

If it works well I can see it being a real selling point for slow cookers at this time in the year  ;) :D

Well if you can give us some recipe ideas Milly, I'd be very pleased.  :) I've had a slow cooker for about 10 years or maybe more and I never feel that I'm geting enough use out of it.  ::)

Didn't Hugh F-W do a glut chutney?  You might find it on his website.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes, I made chutney last year in the slow cooker.  Very successful, but the smell was intense, so ended up taking the slow cooker out into the garage!

Please post the recipe!!!  <begging icon here>  Did you have to reduce the liquid from a conventional stove top recipe? ???

ooh yes - I would be very interested in this! I would also be able to plug it in in the garage, to save stinking out the house - which I do on a regular basis - with my chutney you fools!  :nowink:
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

Just what we're after!  :D Good tip about putting the slow cooker out in the garage too, like I did for the lard rendering....  ::)
