We are in Wiltshire Tick capital of the UK and I have found several now on my chickens, cats etc.   :(

I got this great little tool from my vets to remove them and it also reduces risks of blood coming out of them and on you causing disease. :)

Have a look here,     http://www.otom.com/homepage.htm

I reckon it looks pretty good, as the head comes out intact. :D

I use this tool on the dog and it works fine but somehow there is still a bump on the skin afterwards that takes ages to go.
I recently saw a vid of a method of tick removal that looked useful. You put your finger on the tick and rotate it several times and after a bit you can just pick it off. The tick seems to get dizzy and let go! Apparently it lets go and doesn't leave any mouthparts behind so you get less irritation on the bite site.
I haven't had the chance to try it this summer (and frankly I don't want to!) but it may be worth a go.

Never had trouble with ticks over here, but when I lived in Malta my dog used to get them a lot.  We used to use meths too.  It worked!!!!

a drop of any household cooking oil (olive, sunflower etc) slopped onto the tick leave for 30 secs or so and the tick will retract his head and slide out . i usually use a bluntish pair of tweezers to pull it out. quick, safe and cheap.

When I was younger I spent a lot of time walking & climbing in Scotland.  And often had ticks.  The first time I got them I stuck a burning cigarrette end on one (i'd seen it done in the movies with leeches, Hollywood as a lot to answerfor) it blooming hurt.

I then tried meths (had loads for my stove) to dehydrate them, worked fine and have used this ever since.  A dab of meths on cotton wool and they dry up and drop off.

Not wanting to be picky Bodger but African Queen was Katherine Hepburn not Ingrid Bergman. Leeches - a cast of thousands ..... great film - love Katherine Hepburn - especially in the Lion in Winter.

According to her indoors who recently went on one of these Bushcraft/survival courses the best way to remove ticks without risk of nasty diseases (Lymes) is to use a tick removal tool like the one Slowef has found.

It's important not to leave mouth parts in but also not to squeeze the tick as it just regurgitates it's stomach contents back into your blood supply.

Apparently your not supposed to use solvent like i've used in past for same reason.

Just don't try the meths and the fag at the same time
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
