Mr Gentleman's plot...
« on: August 13, 2011, 06:25 »
When we started with our plot back in the eighties, this plot was worked by an old chap, who was absolutely charming, and very helpful to Mrs Growster and I. In fact, he never had a shed there, and just kept his tools inside a plastic bag, laid on the ground!

One day, he gave me his Canterbury hoe, which I still use regularly, because he was thinking of giving up!

We didn't see him much after that, and when the Parish Council sold a few plots off for housing a few years later, it was taken over my Arthur, a retired man, whose family we all knew well, as they were neighbours.

He kept it immaculate for many years, as he'd worked as a gardener for several local estates.

Fast forward a few years, and when we took over 'Plot Growster' last October, we were saddened to see how this big plot opposite had fallen into such unloved disrepair, and since then, it hasn't been worked at all, because the tenant is unwell, and has now given it up.

And I got a call last night to say that it's ours, all bar the shouting...!

Why on earth do we do it...;0)

We're delighted Argyllie!

It's marvellous to have a project like this to work on over autumn and winter, for next year!

That's fabulous news Growster, and how good that you are already part of the history of your new plot too  :D

Another Floyd fan, Comfortably...?

I reckon about three months min to do this one. I've projected six maximum, because it gets a bit dubious over winter, but at least  by then we'll be able to see the soil for the weeds!

As long as that 'Fat old sun, keeps shining', we'll be OK for springtime!

How are you getting on Fin?

Once you can see over the weeds, you're home and dry!

Very true KC, it was Arthur who actually prompted the 'camber' post, because he used to be out there for ages, just building up the centre away from the egdes.

We're probably going to divide it up into manageble areas, which is something I've been listening to while reading posts here!

Mrs Growster and I are down there this afternoon, and if we're not back, or missed by anyone, we're probably under the bramble mountain, with a torch, trying to find a way out...

Morning Comfortable!

Started on Saturday afternoon - possession is nine tenths of the plot...

Amazingly though, we were a bit trepidated about all the grass there, but the spade goes straight in without a murmer, and after a fork-over for each 'pad' of 9' x 4', and a good half hour with a bashing hoe, the little couch there is, plus all the annual roots just fall out. So far that is...

I looked at the site on 'Gurgle Earth', probably a couple of years old now, and it seems that it was kept in pretty good nick up until last year, so fingers crossed!

'High hopes...'
