Help - What is wrong with my beans
« on: August 12, 2011, 21:14 »
I'm new to growing veg (aside form tomatoes, peppers and herbs) and it's my first year on the allotment.   I sowed broad beans and up until about a little while ago, things were going well.  But in the last few weeks my broad beans have gone downhill - badly.

The leaves on about half of the plants have big brown patches and those ones have very few, if any, bean pods forming.

I have attached some pictures so you can see what I mean.  Any idea what has caused this?  Or is it just the over wet weather this last few weeks?

All advice welcomed.

There's a pic of the plants here

Chocolate spot attacks broad beans in late summer.  I always grow mine early so that I can harvest before it infestes them.

Thanks Aunt Sally

Should I remove them and destroy them?  Is there anything I can do for the nearby, as yet, unaffected bean plants?

You can still eat the beans but follow the advice in the link for next year.  Not a lot you can do this year to change things.  I compost my affected plants as I know my bins get really hot.

Chocolate spot usually occurs as lots of tiny brown spots. When it is wet and humid these join together to form the large agressive spots.

One lesson you should perhaps learn is that broad beans are essentially a crop to be sown Feb/March and enjoyed before other beans and peas are available. Planted late they usually get attacked by blackfly or chocolate spot or both and often produce very few beans. In warm conditions they produce a lot of leaf and few flowers.
