Are they ripe?

Do you know what the variety is? 

They should be hot, you're right!  You say you are only watering when they need... the other quite good thing to do in treating them mean is to keep them in pots as the roots being contained makes them a bit worried.  We grow them in two litre pots - about seven inch across - and the only ones we have this year which are not coming out hot are the ones grown from saved Apache seeds. Apache is an F1 and saved seeds won't grow true. At the time we were given those chillis, I didn't realise these were F1.
