Do mice like parsnips?
« on: August 06, 2011, 21:35 »
Because I can't think of anything else that could have done this to every single parsnip in my bed. The top growth is neatly snipped off at ground level, left untouched, and the entire parsnip is eaten all the way down. I didn't think mice liked parsnips, but I've had the same thing happen to carrots last year and I'm pretty sure that was mice.

Would deer be a possibility?

Not likely. This bed is enclosed with strong wire fence about 4 feet high, and the parsnips were running all the way down the edge. Whatever did this ignored the courgettes and mangetout that were right next to the parsnips. And the courgettes have turned out to be bigger than I was expecting, so they were swamping the parsnips a bit. So unless it was something small, they'd have had to push the courgettes out of the way to do it.

Mice are probably my biggest pest problem with veggies. It's the first time they've bothered this bed but in the raised beds in a different area of my garden they've taken my entire strawberry crop (possibly with some help from squirrels) and I'm not entirely sure it's not them that's demolishing the iceberg lettuce there. Last year they took most of the carrots and damaged the mangetout there too.

Hmmmm rabbits?

No, can't be rabbits. Every bed I use for veggies is completely fenced off with good strong fencing, it has to be, because I've got rabbit warrens all along the bottom of my garden and two large, young and extremely destructive dogs :)

Something neatly snipped off the tops of the very few carrots that germinated from our first sowing. It looked as if the foliage had been neatly snipped with scissors, and then left on the ground. None of it was eaten.

I was told that cutworms could have been the culprit.
