carrot experiment results!
« on: August 06, 2011, 20:49 »
I did a little experiment this year because I didn;t have enough fine net to cover all the carrots I wanted to grow, so I tried out the theory that carrot fly are 'confused' by strong smelling other plants.

Dug some up today. Given them plenty of time (sown 4th April). Short rows across my raised beds in a fairly shelted bit of the plot.

1. Those planted right next to and one row away from corainder (sown at the same time) were only slightly affected; three rows away almost unusable.
2. Those with onions in between were quite badly riddled
3. Those with marigolds all around did not fare too well. The marigolds (calendula) swamped the bed, at 1, tall and floppy, so the carrots are very weedy

Just thought I'd share this  :D

Those under the net curtain, sown at the beginning of May, are so far untouched of course  ;)

Bears out what JayG & I have been saying all along, the only sure fire way is a physical barrier!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks Sunny, that really helps a lot
