Goji Berries
« on: August 06, 2011, 14:00 »
Hi all,

Having got my Goji berry plant from Aldi this week I trotted off to get some ericaceous compost to plant it in.  Now I read you can plant out in any type of compost, does anyone know what is best please?

The information I got when I bought seeds was that after propagation:-

"Be careful not to over-water - goji plants are very drought tolerant. They do not require a rich soil - they are best grown in soil of moderate quality. They like a sunny position and are hardy down to -15c. Keep well drained, mix sand or gravel if necessary to aid drainage."

I got a goji berry from Aldi last year and it is massive now, with some flowers too

Be careful to leave it enough space for it -- it is 1.5m tall and 2m across.

Apparently it used to be used as a hedging plant in years of yore

What a muppet I am. I planted my Goji Berry too close to my path at the allotment - well it's like I'm being attacked when I try to walk by. I think I'll have to move it as it's nearly 6ft tall. Anyone know when and how? I also read that they don't fruit until the second year which is a shame. I'm so impatient.  :)

Autumn will be the best time to move it, as the soil will be (hopefully) damp and warm so new roots will grow quickly.

Mine is just beginning to flower this week   :)

There is a lot of rubbish spouted about Goji berry even from UK suppliers; I found their supplied  instructions were next to useless! There is a Chinese American reseller of Goji products who has got detailed instructions on how to cultivate Lycium Barbarum from seed and cuttings, which should answer your questions.  :D

Download it from; www.fountainofyouth-gojiseed.com - just click on 'download page

I tried to train and grow them along horizontal wires like Blackberry and wasted two seasons, it doesn't work they need to be grown as a tree or tree bush.

Other people have posted on this subject, its all there behind the search button.

We got ours from Ebay last year! It looked like a twig in a bottle when it arrived, it has grown since though and i planted it into the garden around two months ago. It is now losing all of its leaves and looking like a little bare bush, is this normal at this time of year?
