Parsnip foliage turning orange/red - is it canker?
« on: August 05, 2011, 23:31 »
I've recently noticed that my parsnip foliage is changing colour to an orange/red. I've searched the internet but it refers to the top of the crown not the foliage that changes colour. I've had carrot root maggot so maybe this is the cause. What do you think?

I've not heard of this before with parsnips but they are the same family as carrots so I think you may have hit the nail on the head - carrot root fly.  Canker tends to occur at the site of the fly / maggot damage rather than being the initial trigger.

I wouldn't give up on them yet though.

Next year, try covering them with fine netting like enviromesh to keep the fly out (though I never do this myself, just cut out the affected bits after harvest).
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Occasionally parsnips are affected by carrot root fly and the orabngy leaves sound like this might be the case.

Luckily it is usuallly easy to cut out the affected part when you harvest them, as the roots are so bog, whereras with carrots, It is very fiddly indeed.

Do you think I should pull up the parsnip now to check or leave till after a frost? I hate the fly!!! Grew some carrots in a tub 4ft off the ground and luckily so far these are okay.

Carrots, parsnips, parsley; same family, same pesky fly!

My experience with parsnips is the same as Yorkie's - the canker resulting from carrot fly damage is not usually severe enough to trash the whole root, although any attack isn't usually severe enough to cause much affect on the foliage in my experience.

Give them a good feed to cheer them up and keep an eye on them; if the foliage continues to redden and/or die you might have to investigate what's happening under the soil.  :(
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
