Earwigs in my corn
« on: August 02, 2011, 20:55 »
I'm new to vegatable gardening (and this site) but have really been enjoying the fruits of my labour, and worried about my plants more than the wife and kids sometimes.

One veg I have tried is baby sweetcorn, which has been steadily growing since planting and now is showing signs of fruit from the centre of the plant.  Checking the plants out tonight I noticed earwigs among the corn.  Is this a problem and if so how do I deal with it?

Any advice would be really welcome.

Cheers
Mick

I can only think of making earwig traps.
look here for how to make them

Yes they are a problem!
I dont know any better way of getting shut other than traps but make sure you empty them every day,

Against corn borers and earwigs, we pour just a bit of cheap cooking oil on the silks at the cob connection. Doesn't affect the corn at all but makes it undesirable for pests.

That's another useful tip Trillium. :) As I posted  in reply elsewhere yesterday, the earwigs are bad this year, but they're not going on our baby corn, thankfully.
