What is this squash?
« on: September 18, 2007, 22:56 »
I'm intrigued. The plant - spotted in a neighbouring plot - looks like a courgette/marrow, but the fruit looks like pumpkin? Could it be a result of cross pollination? It's so pretty, I'd love some next year, if it's a variety I can get, lol!

I'm such a nosey copy cat me   , but it's how to learn!

Wait a mo the others will soon answer. In the meanwhile I would say its a courgette.
It looks like one of the range introduced by T&M in around 2005 or 6.
Tricolour F1 Hybrid.
Each plant produced one of three colours.I think they were Dark Green Light Green or Yellow.

I'd say courgette as well, perhaps an Italian hybrid.

Only way to know for sure is knock at the door and ask - and ask for seed. I would

I think W_G meant the mildew is on the leaves not the Courgete.                                                                                                      I did not mention it because it is on another plot .

Is that what powdery mildew looks like? I think it looks kinda pretty     .

Thank goodness I've not got it on my plot. Does it affect the fruit?

If I see the plot owner I'll scrounge for one, lol! And save seeds for next year - unless that's not advisable due to the mildew???

if it's F1 hybrid as others have suggested, then seeds won't breed true.

Powdery mildew is a horrible pest, seems to produce weakness that allows other casual organisms to hit where they would be unaffected otherwise.

last year I grew gem squash and decided to sow seeds from one of the fruits - of course, I didn't expect the bee population to visit every squash and courgette flower for miles around.  From 6 seeds, I had 3 that were gem squash like (dark green as expected), 2 dark green oval shaped (not round but not elongated like marrow), and one yellow fruiting one which is every bit like a gem squash (rock hard skin and texture) but bright yellow like the photo.

Looking at the photo, I would definitely say courgette.

They look like the one ball courgette plants a neighbouring plotholder gave me. To be honest, although they look novel, I prefere the regular courgettes as I got more off them.

WG is spot on, One ball it is, I'm growing it. Widely available: Kings, Fothergills, etc.

Powdery mildew is kinda part of a corquette, not much to worry about, they happily produce and the fruit remains unaffected except for extreme cases, I have not seen one yet.

Taste is OK, nice and crispy flesh, cheers up a plate to no end.

Def one Ball - I've got the green equivalent, Eight Ball which is also nice. You can grow them marrow sized too and they turn orange and store quite well over autumn. They're good for grilling/bbq as the slices are nice and big and round anf flat. highly recommended!
