Lettuce in a hurry
« on: July 31, 2011, 01:43 »
Haven't bought a lettuce for a year because I've been on top of the succession sowing even through Winter. Then BAD Cadbury (a new chicken with a brain AND very agile) managed to get up on a table covered with netting and, getting under, proceeded to demolish 3 troughs of good sized lettuce. I only had seedlings left and a few medium heads in a raised bed.
We eat LOTS of lettuce and when I saw the "living salad" in Lidl was reduced to 50p I bought one.
I got 48 plants out of it and they'll be ready to pick baby leaf in a week. 8)

I've used that sort of thing before to give a head start. Just plant them out with much more space than they have in the supermarket container.
