not sure about keeping quail now!
« on: July 30, 2011, 20:24 »
i'm considering keeping some quail but have just read a previous thread and am now not sure.
do they really smell so bad?
do you have to keep a male with them?
how noisy are they?
I know I'll become addicted, i'll just have to move house...
It starts with 3!!! (june 19 2011)

We contacted our breeder recently and he confirmed that you don't have to keep a male with them.
Ours are silent, i've never heard them make a noise in the year we've had them.
But they do smell! No more than the chickens do though, if you keep them clean then they're fine and they're low maintenance
4 Dogs: Stanley, Oscar, Borris and Scraps, 8 chickens: Prada, Mulberry, Alessi, Apple, Dior, Bobbi, Eve and Fendi, 2 Guinea Pigs: Rupert and Milo, 3 Rabbits: Louis, Daisy and Charlie 2 Fish: Sandy and Pebbles, 6 Quail

We have 5 Japanese quail, we clean them out once a week and move their coop and run every few days and that stops them smelling. They only start to smell if we're not able to move them for a week and you can only smell it when you're in the coop with them. They're lovely little birds and their eggs are amazing =)

I did a lot of research before I got my quail and there were mentions of them being smelly. I have had them for a year now and do not find they are smelly - perhaps keeping them clean is the key but I only clean out weekly. Mine have got a lot more space than the minimum recommendations so I don't know if this makes a difference!

They do make noises but I don't find them noisy. You get an odd loud sqawk but that is all - certainly no worse than the wild bird population.

I started with a boy and 5 girls but lost a girl. The only reason I opted for a boy was because they are supposed to keep the peace.

I have not regretted my quails and will probably replace them when the time comes. :)

I have chickens and ducks as well and it is the quail that everyone finds fascinating :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

thank you all for your replies.
i've decided to get three more hens instead.
i am still new (first 3 hens 19th june), and would like to be more experienced with my hens before i start with something else as well.
i will definately consider keeping quail in the future though.
i've had no problems with my ladies so far, winter will be a test i think.
