Pepper plant pests
« on: July 27, 2011, 11:38 »
Hi, i have invaders on my peppers! Noticed this morning little cobwebs and tiny, tiny little pests....too small to see what they are. Have peppers and chillis on my living room window sill and the chillis dont seem as badly affected. Has anyone got an idea what they could be and how to get rid of them?

Thanks!

red spider mite

Keep the atmosphere around the plants as humid as possible and mist them often.
I don't think there are any pesticides that work on them either..........I know Provado Ultimate doesn't work :(

Is there nothing that will get rid of/kill them? Will they do damage to my plants?

Really bad infestation will literally suck all the goodness out of the plants leaves, so they turn yellow and die.
Spongeing  the leaves off gently will kill some of them, but they're a pain once you've got them.
Look at the RHS advice

Oh no. I have checked and they are on the chillis as well. Will start spraying them and maybe try to sponge them down. Would a garlic spray or soapy spray help? Thanks for answering mumofstig  :)

I've had a slug on mine and it's basically munched on every pepper
Red spider mites sound cute in comparison.

slug problems can be sorted with pellets ::).............whereas nothing seems to stop spider mites :( and they can easily kill plants.............they're certainly not cute!

If you wipe out all their webs and spary well with tepid water you might keep them down enough not to kill the plants

Let's hope so  :) :)

I'm avoiding organic pellets and put nasturtiums everywhere. They were supposed to munch on them dammit!

I'm not religious but I'm sure St Anthony - patron saint of lost causes- might be of assistance . He helps with aphids, cucumber blossom droop and lost car keys.

I have problems with my hungarian wax plants. There is something boring a hole in the fruits at the stem end and when one is cut open there are lots of what look like soot marks inside. The plants have lots of peppers but have already had to take several off. Any ideas?
Gets very frustrating when so much is effort is put in from seeds sown in February!

They have basically become immune to anything you can now get (or would want) to spray on your veg. Increase the humidity dramatically may reduce their numbers and encourage them to go else where.  I've also submerged badly infected plants in a bucket of soapy water before now to help control them.  :nowink:

That'll be pepper maggot then.

Mine are badly affected too, but spraying them with organic bug spray has no success so just resorting to washing them off with the hose but it involves taking the whole lot outside.  I am wiping the leaves in between showers  :nowink:
