As previously mentioned, you have a right to information held about you.

http://www.ico.gov.uk/for_the_public/personal_information/how_manage/access_info.aspx

I'd suggest contacting your councillor first, asking for their help as I'm sure you'd prefer it not to become official.

If your councillor can't or won't help then make it official as per link above.  But you might have to pay a fee.

It depends how badly you want the information.  But do everything in writing.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Trying to find out where you stand is good. But, waiting years on a list for an allotment is not unusual, it's not good to wait so long, but it's not at all unusual.
I waited almost 3 years to get mine

Contact Mary Creigh, shes great at helping anything like this :D

Yes, it's over 3 years on the list I manage.

On the allotment that my neighbour just got, that im 'helping' him with, hes been on it 15 years, so it is a long wait :(

We have the same problem down here - a four/ five year wait for a plot on some sites. Whisperings on the grapevine have said that the council has now pulled its finger out and has issued letters to tenants who are not keeping thier plot up to scratch. They have two weeks to make a start or they are going to be chucked off (hopefully they follow through with this as some are a mess). It could be worth looking around the site(s) to see if plots are being tended to in order to put extra pressure on the council via your letters or the local press if you are feeling brave. Social networking sites could be one way to find others on the list and again help you to put extra pressure on your local council, if, like mine, they are not proactive when it comes to their allotment sites.

I agree.  Worth visiting sites and talking to those who actively cultivate their plots.  They will know which plots are neglected and unvisited.  Worth pointing out those to the allotment officer.  Also I would recommend contacting a local councillor, this will have quite an effect on the allotment office if they are pressed to handle requests from elected officials.

i live in Wakefield and i got my plot after just a couple of months waiting. In my area they are run by the local Parish Council and i phoned the Councillor and then she called me back a month or two later anf took me down to my plot.

Just shows that even in small cities and towns there are large differences in waiting times.

Well, I have managed to secure myself a plot with help from some very dear friends. Its only half a plot but adequate for my needs. Its a private association but Im going to keep my name on the waiting list for council allotment. Cant wait to get stuck in
