My Stuttgart Onions - Mildew? Fungus? Help!
« on: July 24, 2011, 12:36 »
Our veg patch seems to have really suffered from too much water and not enough warmth this year, and its showing....

My onions - which I consider to be a failsafe crop in our garden - they love the soil - have proceeded to 'wilt' on me.

They started going yellow at the tips, which have now turned brown and died. The onions themselves are ok-ish, but the stems are very wet and squishy. I've looked this up and scared myself rigid with the 'white rot' scenario, but having dug a random few up, there is no sign of any fungal problem with the actual bulbs, so am inclined to think that its a damp air problem, and not a damp soil problem.

The only thing that is different, is that I have planted them a little closer together this year, not knowing that of course it was going to be wetter. (Isn't hindsight just great??!!)

I rotate my veg  over a 3 or 4 year rotation, and we had potatoes in the bed last year.

Any ideas? Thank you!

Stop worrying or I'll slap your leg!   It all sounds good to me,  onion foliage starting to die off, no sign of white rot,  ::) looooking goood.   :D Cheer   up.   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

My onions didn't look like this until mid/end August last year....  Is everything  that early, then?

Don`t know about the "wet and squishy bit, but mine have all succumbed to downy mildew and the leaves are now black.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

If the onions themselves are OK, dig them all up, cut off the squishy stems ect and leave them to dry, as usual.  :)
