Purple Drawf Fench Beans
« on: July 23, 2011, 18:18 »
Bought these without reading the dwarf bit, anything dwarf is slug food normally but these seem to have done ok. Nice purple flowers and a purple tint to the leaves but the beans are green

Do they turn purple when fully ripe or are mine defective ?

I think they are in the clear as far as the trade descriptions act goes,  after all, the flowers are purple.
Our pods are megga purple from day one.     Cheers,   Tony.

They start green, go purple as they mature, then go green again when you cook them.

Sounds like a waste of time doesn't it!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

But it is easy to see when they are ready to pick, and they show up well against the green leaves  :nowink:

As long as they will turn colour eventually.

But it is easy to see when they are ready to pick, and they show up well against the green leaves  :nowink:

Thats actually exactly why I bought them  :D  Id have preferred climbing ones, "dwarf" is a long way away to spot green beans on a green plant !    :(

I think its probably a coincidence, I've not actually had much of a problem with slugs this year at all.  :D

Last year I tried Ferrari and Sonesta both ended up as slug food before I saw a single bean.

I've got climbing beans with purple flowers/pods, Blauhilde. No pods on it yet, though, just flowers.

I have some of these, and now they've recovered from the blackfly, the flowers are purple and the pods almost black, they're dark purple when fully grown...dunno about cooking, haven't got round to that yet!

I grew some purple ones last year and they were purple from the start.  did really well too.

If you steam rather than boil, they stay purplish!
