Strange Exbatt
« on: July 23, 2011, 14:58 »
Can some one give me some advice please, one of my ex batt girls is behaving very strangely, she is standing under bushes without moving for hours, then she wonders off scrats about and acts normally then the next time you look she is under a bush again? Her crest has taken on a dark purple colour at the edges as well.  She is about 2 years old and we have had her for 7 months.  All her other coop mates are normal.   ???

the purple comb could be a symptom of heart trouble  :(.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Sadly ex batts have had such an awfull life that many of them don't live long once realeased. They can suffer from lots of problems including kidney failure and heart trouble.
Just keep a close eye on her and make sure she is eating and drinking and that she can keep cool (which being under the bushes will help this).

I have noticed she is drinking a lot, her croup is full of water and she is leaking water out her back side

I have given her some marmite and about 4 ml of probiotic yougut.

She is just about back to her normal self today, I think one more dose of yogurt and marmite and that should do it.

It could have been that she had a bit of a sour crop and the bio yogurt would certainly have helped her shift it. Give her another dose of it in a day or two to make sure, but I'm really glad she's picking up.

She's been running round the garden with the rest of the gang today, no hiding under bushes or drinking loads of water.  I will give her some more yogurt on wed or Thursday.

I'm so glad she recovered.

Good news, let's hope she continues for many months, they deserve so much better than the previous life they had to endure!

Help shes ill again.

Same symptoms as before but her croop is normal this time.  Could it be Coccidiosis?

What should I do.

  We went out to get some tonic from the farm shop and some bio yogurt and when we got back she was fine and dandy.

We had very similar symptoms with an ex batt a couple of years ago: drinking loads, very watery poo, lethargic much of the time, and then would seem to pick up for a couple of days.   She died in the end (I think we had her for about 4 months) and we concluded that it was probably a liver problem.   We lost 3 out of 4 of our ex-batts within 8 months of getting them which was very sad, but seems to be fairly common from the other posts on this site.  But giving ex batts a chance to behave like "real" hens has to be a good thing, even if short lived.

I really hope that your hen recovers.  Fingers crossed.
